Why purchase cows?
- A good milking cow costs $1000 and produces about 15 liters (4 gallons) of milk each day.
- The school currently spends about $1,400-1,700 per month on milk for the 750 students.
- With these cows, the school will be more self-sufficient and refocus their resources toward other nutritional, education, and housing needs for the boys.
- This is a long-term sustainable project - the cows will have calves which will add to and renew the herd.
- In addition to saving money by producing their own milk, "waste" will not be wasted! It will be used as fertilizer for the school gardens and as fuel for the school kitchens.
- Students who are studying agriculture will help with the care and feeding of the cows.
- Stalls for the cows have been built on the school grounds.
